What is Speech-Language Pathology?


Speech-Language Pathology involves the identification, assessment and treatment of a wide variety of communication disorders (congenital, developmental, and acquired) in both children and adults. Such disorders may include

  • phonological (articulation)
  • language
  • voice fluency (stuttering)
  • hearing problems

Treatment may involve direct individual or group therapy

  • client/family counselling
  • other indirect treatment, often in coordination with various health care professionals.

Speech-Language Pathologists also participate in the assessment and management of clients with swallowing difficulties.

Where do Speech-Language Pathologists work?

    Speech-Language Pathologists work in a variety of locations including hospital, community health centres, schools universities, other special institutions, and in private practice.

Professional qualifications

    A university degree in Speech-Language Pathology is necessary to practice Speech-Language Pathology in Alberta. Most Speech-Language Pathologists are members of the Speech-Language and Hearing Association of Alberta (S.H.A.A.) and the Canadian Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (C.A.S.L.P.A.) and are fully certified with the C.A.S.L.P.A.
