Respiratory Therapy is a key player in the multidisciplinary approach to diagnosis, treatment, education, and promotion of well-being for patients with cardio-pulmonary and associated disorders. Our Department
Inpatient Services
Interdisciplinary Programs All staff have the opportunity to participate in our interdisciplinary programs. In addition to the existing programs our management is always supportive of ideas for new programs that have a community focus. Our existing programs include: The Respiratory Sleep Diagnostics Program serves the Edmonton Region. Respiratory Therapy performs nightly Level III diagnostic testing to aid in the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea. The Respiratory Therapists also perform Level III CPAP Titration studies for patients with obstructive sleep apnea. The CPAP clinic at the Misericordia Hospital opened in response to the need o patients in its sleep diagnostics program. The goal of the CPAP clinic is to have the Respiratory Therapist specialized in the area of Sleep Diagnostics and CPAP clinic assist. Sleep apnea patients with education on OSA as well as standard treatment for OSA (nasal CPAP). We provide equipment for patients for their home trial of CPAP and maintain contact with the patients during their home trial of CPAP, so any problems or concerns are dealt with quickly. The Respiratory Therapist also sees the patient in follow-up to aid patients who are experiencing difficulty with their CPAP system. The CPAP clinic is operated by Respiratory Therapy in cooperation with Respiratory Home Care Supply Companies. Misericordia has both an adult and pediatric asthma clinic. Coordinated by respiratory therapists, the asthma clinic provides support, education, environmental trigger avoidance, self-management skills, pulmonary diagnostics and personalized action plans. Hyperbaric Oxygen Program (HBO) This is the only program in the province and it is staffed by Respiratory Therapists who have had additional training through a recognized Hyperbaric Program. The staff are responsible for the delivery, treatment and patient safety of this very unique therapy. Wound Care Respiratory therapists trained in Hyperbaric medicine may be involved in the delivery of transcutaneous oxygen tests in a state-of-the-art wound care program in an interdisciplinary setting.
