Physical Therapy Services for People Admitted to our Hospital


The hospital is staffed by physical therapists and physical therapy assistants, the inpatient team provides therapy to patients admitted to Surgery, Medicine, Intensive Care (ICU), Coronary Care (CCU), Emergency, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Day Surgery, and Pre-admission Clinic (PAC). A pre-operative assessment area and two treatment areas located conveniently on the sixth and seventh floors allow patients easy access to therapy. As part of an interdisciplinary team, physical therapists work closely with physicians, nurses, occupational therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and respiratory therapists. Therapists maintain high standards of knowledge and expertise by taking post-degree coures in stroke rehabilitation, gait training, balance rehabilitation, osteoporosis management, muscle re-education, and orthopedics.

Medicine Patients admitted to Medicine, with conditions such as stroke, lung disease, cancer, dementia, heart disease, and other medical or neurological conditions, may receive physical therapy for muscle strengthening, gait re-education, balance re-education, pain management, stroke rehabilitation, or chest physical therapy.
Surgery Patients admitted to Surgery for hip or knee replacement, ligament repair, fracture management, or other orthopedic surgery may receive physical therapy for muscle strengthening and gait re-education with crutches, canes, or walkers as needed.

Patients admitted for abdominal or thoracic surgery may require chest physical therapy to help prevent post-operative lung complications.

Geriatarics Seniors citizens admitted to Medicine or Surgery may also be treated by physical therapists on the Geriatric Assessment Unit (GAU) for further rehabilitation when warranted.
Intensive Care (ICU) Patients admitted to Intensive Care may receive chest physical therapy, muscle strengthening, and gait re-education as required.
Coronary Care (CCU) Patients who have had a heart attach or who hae a hearat condition such as congestive heart failure, are taught how to progress their activity level safely and how to exercise effectively to keep their heart as strong and healthy as possible. Physical therapists also see patients sheduled for coronary artery bypass surgery to explain how to progress their activity level after surgery.
Pediatrics Children with conditions such as asthma or pneumonia may areceive chest physical therapy to help clear secretios from their lungs. Physical therapists also teach children how to use crutches after surgical repair of fratures or other orthopedic problems.
Emergency Patients who have difficulty walking are assessed by a physical therapist, if needed, to see if they can manage safely at home.
Surgical Dayward Patients who require crutches or progressive exercise after surgery are seen by a physical therapist.
Pre-admission Clinic (PAC) Physical therapists see patients scheduled for surgery such as hip or knee replacement to explain the rehabilitation required after surgery. Physical therapists also see patients scheduled for mastectomy to teach post-operative arm and shoulder exercises.
