Chronic Pain Clinic


The chronic pain clinic at the Misericordia Hospital is conducted by physicians from the Department of Anaesthesia and Pain Control at the University of Alberta Hospitals. The current director is Dr. Brian Knight, MD, FRCP (C). The clinic also includes services by physiotherapy and nursing staff of the Misericordia Hospital.

The service is provided once per week on an outpatient basis. Patients are admitted by referral from family physicians or other specialists.

Types of Conditions Treated

Patients with any form of chronic pain syndrome are considered for admission to the programme. Typical conditions seen are:

  • chronic myofascial pain syndromes
  • complex regional pain syndrome/RSD
  • phantom limb pain
  • cancer pain
  • neuropathic pain

Types of treatment provided

  • medication prescription and control
  • nerve blocks
  • trigger point injection
  • physiotherapy
  • intrathecal pumps
  • referral to other specialists and services as indicated
