Clients are referred to Occupational Therapy Outpatient Services at the Misericordia Community Hospital and Health Centre for specialized services including:

• Pes Cavus
• Metatarsalgia
• Archilles tendonitis

Orthopaedic Conditions

Rheumatological Conditions

Repetitive Strain Injuries

Neurological Conditions

Burns

Dysphagia

Goals of Treatment

Goals of therapy vary according to each patient's unique problems and needs. This requires an individualized approach to therapy involving a customized treatment plan following a thorough assessment by an Occupational Therapist.

Common goals are an attempt to achieve maximum independence in daily living by relieving pain, increasing range of motion, increasing strength, preventing or correcting physical disability and teaching the use of adaptive equipment and aids.

Common Modalities used:

• Splinting: dynamic and static
• Orthotic management and teaching in the selection of appropriate footwear and footcare, etc.
• Heat treatments: fluidotherapy, wax, hot packs
• Wound Care (pressure offloading, compression therapy, diabetic teaching)
• Gross motor, fine motor assessment
• Hand assessment (pediatrics)
• Cold treatments: ice, cold packs, contrast baths
• Therapeutic exercise programs
• Education in joint protections and energy conservation techniques
• Activities of Daily Living (ADL) assessment and training
• Assessment for adaptive aids and equipment

Clients are often provided with individualized home programs which are designed so that responsibility for functional ability and independence resides with the client.

Appointment times are available five days a week for 0800 to 1530.
