Since this time, officers working at our sites now attend the Police Recruit's Training offered at the Alberta Justice Staff College in order to receive Special Constable appointment under the Alberta Police Act.
The Community Peace Officer appointment was sought because security staff was often required to perform tasks for which they had no legal authority. The officers have Peace Officer authority under 32 sections of eight Alberta Provincial laws.
Probation and TrainingA new employee of the security department will be expected to complete a six-month probationary period while working with a senior officer. During this time, the newly appointed officer will be expected to learn the daily operations, policies and procedures of the organization. The officer will receive training in self-defence techniques (HOST training), crisis prevention, and bylaw enforcement. This training is offered at no cost to the employee. Once the candidate has successfully completed the probationary period, he or she will be considered for Peace Officer training.
Hospital Officer Safety Training (HOST)
All members of the security department receive training in the organization's own security training system. The system, entitled Hospital Officer Safety Training, is a unique security-training regimen modeled after Bruce Siddle's Pressure Point Control Tactics system. The HOST program was developed by members of the Security Training Division to address the specific security needs of the organization. Through HOST, our officers develop valuable skills in various disciplines including:
- Collapsible baton training
- Defensive counter-strikes
- Dynamic simulations
- Edged weapons defense
- Escort and joint lock control
- Ground fighting defense
- Hospital restraints
- Injury prevention techniques
