Volunteer Services

Volunteer Services
Caritas Volunteer Services offers a wide variety of volunteer programs to meet the needs of patients and their families. The diverse array of volunteer experiences means there's something for everyone, no matter what your skills and availability might be.

Friendly Visiting
Individuals who volunteer in this program spend their time socially interacting with residents and patients on a regular basis. Activities include reading and writing letters with patients and residents, and taking part in spiritual care, pet therapy and caring clown programs.

Recreational Activities
Volunteers with this program help residents and patients participate in activities like bingo, dancing, art and music.

Customer Service
Individuals volunteering in customer service work at the businesses, such as the gift shops and cafes, that are located at the three Caritas healthcare facilities.

Patient Services
Volunteers help provide residents and patients with a comfortable quality of life while they are in the care of Caritas Health Group. Volunteers help nurses by serving meal trays, feeding patients, adjusting pillows and bedding, and taking care of any other comfort needs of the patients.

Community Outreach
Volunteers working in the Community Outreach program perform hospital tours for kindergarten students and work with programs such as PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth), Prime Time, Homecrafters and the Layette Program.

Becoming a Volunteer
This year Caritas has a team of 12,000 volunteers who have contributed over 100,000 volunteer hours and fundraised $500,000. Reach out and make a difference. Join our team and be part of the success.

Benefits of Volunteering
Volunteers of Caritas Health Group participate in a rewarding and challenging working environment. It is our mission to provide patients and residents with superior care and services and it would be impossible to achieve this mission without the patience and dedication of Caritas volunteers. In return for their valuable contributions to our organization, Caritas volunteers enjoy the satisfaction of helping others and lifting the spirits of patients and residents. In addition, volunteers experience personal development opportunities through coaching, seminars and support from colleagues and patients. Students can gain valuable knowledge and skills that can be later applied to a career in the healthcare industry.

Volunteer Requirements
The goal of Caritas Health Group is to maintain a centre of excellence for our patients. To ensure we can consistently provide our patients with superior care, we require that all Caritas volunteers meet several requirements before they can work in one of our three healthcare facilities. Prior to being accepted as a volunteer, you will be required to:
  • Be over 13 years of age. Special consideration may be given to individuals under the age of 13. In some circumstances, parental participation may be encouraged when children volunteer at the hospital.
  • Attend a volunteer information session.
  • Complete an application form.
  • Provide two references and/or reference letters (if possible) from an employer, volunteer supervisor, teacher or co-worker.
