A comprehensive and integrated program, the Wound Care program is for the management and resolution of chronic, non-healing wounds. Chronic wounds are defined as "full thickness wounds that fail to show significant improvement in four weeks or complete healing in eight weeks." Wounds may also include ulcers, tissue injury, amputations and osteomyelitis.
The multi-disciplinary program at the Misericordia Community Hospital was the first of its kind in the region when it began in 1997. The Wound Clinic's team consists of a physician, infectious disease specialist, hyperbaric specialists, nurses, and respiratory, occupational and physical therapists.
The team members work in conjunction with patients and their families to develop an individualized care plan which may include many therapies. All members have specialized training in wound care, and are dedicated to providing coordinated, outcome-oriented care.
The services offered by the Wound Care program for patients may include:
- Lifestyle risk assessment and preventative strategies
- Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy [include link to Hyperbaric Oxygen page]
- Debridement or skin grafting
- Medications
- Electrical stimulation or compression
- Specialty wound dressings or footwear
- Surgical consultation and intervention.
The Wound Care program services and dedicated team provides treatment for patients with complex conditions to improve their quality of life and livelihood.
