When patients are experiencing severe symptoms that require intensive management, they are assessed by the Palliative Care Team for admission to the inpatient Tertiary Palliative Care Unit. All of the rooms on the unit are private, and patients stay an average of three weeks before being discharged to home or a hospice setting.
Care given on the Unit is patient-focused, and sensitive to an individual's values, beliefs and practices. The team considers the unique spectrum of patient needs, which includes physical, psychological, spiritual and social aspects of care.
The Tertiary Palliative Care Unit is world-renowned for its expert and compassionate care. In fact, health professionals from as far away as Singapore have visited the unit to learn from its innovative model of care. Many different health professionals work together to alleviate pain and create a comfortable environment for patients and their families.
As a part of the Regional Palliative Care program, the Tertiary Palliative Care Unit is dedicated to affirming life. The Program aims to provide relief from pain and other distressing symptoms, while supporting family and friends during illness and the subsequent bereavement process.
