Mental Health - Inpatient programs
Units 91, 92 and 93 are the inpatient units in the Mental Health ward at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital.
Unit 91 (30 beds) and Unit 93 (22 beds) are acute care inpatient psychiatric units. A wide range of psychiatric illnesses are assessed and treated. Treatment may include individual and group therapy, medication management, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), dietary counseling, and exercise and leisure programs.
Unit 92 is a ten bed intensive care, inpatient psychiatric unit. Assessment and treatment of the profoundly ill, suicidal, aggressive, and psychotic patient occurs in a secure locked environment. Patient safety is of primary importance.
Outpatient programs
Psychiatric Outpatient Program (POP)
This program offers a psychodynamic 12-week day therapy program, focusing on insights gained through structured group therapy. Space is available for 24 patients, with 12 new patients joining the program every six weeks. Patients may be referred to the program by a psychiatrist, family doctor or mental health professional.
The interdisciplinary team is composed of mental health practitioners including nurses, psychologists, social workers, psychiatrists a spiritual care chaplain. The group psychotherapy sessions focus on gaining insight into unhealthy relational styles through a specific focus on communication skills, assertiveness, emotional awareness, coping skills, core beliefs, anger management and relationships.
Patients who would benefit from more group therapy after they have completed the twelve-week program are welcome to attend the Insight Follow-up
Group Psychiatric Partial Hospitalization Program (PPHP)
This program is geared to meet the needs of discharged inpatients who are recovering from an acute psychiatric illness but are not yet ready to function independently. Individual and group therapy, outpatient and maintenance ECT, medication management and support are provided. The various group sessions available cover topics such as exercise, assertiveness, anger management, self-awareness, creative expression, social interaction, relaxation, stress management, illness management, medication management, self expression, self awareness, and self management.
Patients must be referred to the program by their psychiatrist from the inpatient psychiatry unit or from the community. Space is available for 30 patients who have the option of attending the program for a full day or part day according to patient needs. The program is open Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Patients attend for four weeks after an inpatient admission or six weeks if they come from the community.
Psychiatric Day Centre
This centre offers social, leisure and fitness activities for individuals experiencing a treatment resistant mental illness over a long period of time. The focus of the program is to provide support and bridging between the hospital and the community and to prevent hospital readmission. There is no time limit for attendance.
Couple's Communication Group
Patients can also be referred to the Couple's Communication Group, which they attend with their spouse or significant other. The group meets every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. over a period of 10 weeks. The goal of the Couple's Communication Group is to teach communication skills that facilitate honest, direct and caring dialogue between couples.
Cognitive Behavioral Group Therapy Program
This program provides patients with group therapy sessions that address social anxiety, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic, agoraphobia, and depression.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy
This program treats individuals who have been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.
