The Labour and Delivery unit has birthing rooms and two operating rooms in which cesarean sections are performed. The Postpartum Unit at the Grey Nuns is made up of two separate units that have private, semi-private and theme rooms available. In most cases, babies and mothers stay together during their time in this unit, except when either the mother or baby is ill and requires specialized care.
Prenatal Education ProgramAs part of the Prenatal Education Program, prenatal classes are available throughout the year in the Labour and Delivery Unit of the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. Pregnant women who plan to give birth at the Grey Nuns are welcome to sign up and to bring a partner to the class. Both women who are going through their first pregnancy and pregnant women who have previously given birth are welcome to attend the prenatal classes.
The classes cover various topics including how to prepare for the baby's birth, unexpected events that occur during labour and birth, relaxation and breathing exercises, breastfeeding information, parenting tips, and infant car seat safety. The classes are most effective when women attend during the seventh or eighth months of their pregnancies. The cost for the class is $85.
Class times
Classes are scheduled both during the evening and on weekends to meet the needs of busy families. Classes fill up quickly, so it is best to register early.
Virtual Hospital Tour
Pregnant women who are not attending prenatal classes are encouraged to view a virtual of the obstetrical area before they deliver their babies at the hospital. See the link to the right of the screen.
