1. Do I need a formal doctor referral to enter the program?
No. You can call us directly at (780) 735-7121 to register. Written medical clearance is requested for patient with conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease or diabetes that have been stabilized.
2. Is this therapy?
No. Although many participants experience considerable therapeutic benefits, the programs are called "recreational exercise." Some results participants have reported are: "My legs feel stronger and I have had an overall improvement in my sleep patterns;" "I feel tremendous;" and "I am now able to do stairs properly."
3. What qualifications do the staff have?
The staff at Rehabilitation Outreach Services has the following qualifications:
- Alberta Fitness Leaders Certification
- Bachelor of Physical Education
- Personal Fitness Training
- Massage Therapy Registration and Licensing
4. Is there a waiting list?
No. We believe that people contact us when they are motivated, so we want to "strike while the iron is hot." We often add new classes to our schedule mid-session to accommodate newcomers.
5. What is the average length of participation in the programs?
Many participants have been attending for five years, with the average being between 2 ½ to three years. An individual may return as many times as they wish.
6. How committed are the participants to the exercise classes?
Adults who enter these programs usually have not been involved in any regular fitness activity, sport or exercise program since their youth. However, they tend to be highly motivated because they exercise to live rather than live to exercise and recognize the need to have physical activity in their lives to counteract the effects of osteoarthritis, chronic pain, the impact of long-term injury, excess weight, stress, osteoporosis and high blood pressure.
7. How can I get more information?
Call the Rehabilitation Outreach coordinator at (780) 735-7167 with any questions or to request brochures. Our secretary is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:45 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Otherwise, feel free to reproduce and distribute this information as you see fit.
