Caritas Health Group is Alberta's largest faith-based provider of health care. The organization was formed in 1992 from the merger of what are now the Misericordia and Grey Nuns Hospitals and the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre. Now with Youville Home in St. Albert joining the team in April 2008, Caritas has a history of 145 years of service in the Edmonton area.
Caritas takes its name from a Latin expression for "love" and "charity." The word "caritas" encompasses the concepts of mercy, grace, goodwill, and helpfulness. The name was chosen upon the merger of the facilities to reflect the values and traditions of our founders—the Misericordia Sisters and the Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns)—who brought hope and healing to a rugged, pioneer land.
As a Catholic organization extending care to people of all faiths and traditions, Caritas Health Group is sponsored by the Alberta Catholic Health Corporation. Caritas draws on a rich tradition of holistic and compassionate care, summed up in our Mission Statement: "Healing the Body, Enriching the Mind, Nurturing the Soul." |
