Maureen Eykelenboom indicated that it is very important to the family that an international project be undertaken to reflect Andrew's concern for the women and children that he encountered in Afghanistan.
Andrew spent some time here at the Misericordia observing our health care system and decided to join the military and become a medic. During his tour of duty, he wrote home about the people of Afghanistan and his sense of fulfillment when he and his colleagues were able to make a difference. He demonstrated the power of hope and compassion as he connected with people—especially children—one on one.
Maureen's former colleagues at the Misericordia and Caritas Health Group share her son's dream and his quest to make a difference.
Andrew's nickname was "Boomer." In tribute to Andrew and to carry on his work, the Misericordia community has launched a "Boomer Cap" initiative. The "Boomer Cap" is a handmade cap that can be given to newborn babies to help keep them warm.
We invite you to join Andrew's quest to care for people on the other side of the world. For those who wish to knit/crochet one or more of these Boomer Caps in Andrew's memory, please go to the Save the Children website www.savethechildren.org/capstothecapital/ and download the knitting and crochet patterns. All caps can be dropped off at Misericordia Volunteer Services, 16940-87 Avenue, Edmonton. Please note that it is important to use the patterns given to ensure that they fit the infants.
Thank you for your part in this tribute to Cpl. Andrew James Eykelenboom's dedicated service and sacrifice for his country.
