Postpartum: A Time to Embrace
After the high emotions and intense action of the delivery room, the postpartum unit offers a quieter atmosphere for moms, babies and families to get acquainted. With an average stay of 24-hours for births without complications, the unit serves an important role in supporting and monitoring mom and baby during the first critical hours of their relationship.
Labour and Delivery: A Time to be Born
Jennifer Hotchkiss was one of the thousand of women who gave birth in a Caritas hospital last year. As the 21-year-old first-time mom adjusted to life with baby Tristyn eight months later, she could easily recall how the Grey Nuns staff made her feel safe and supported during her 11-hour labour.

Building for Greater Service: Grey Nuns Day Clinic Support Building Under Construction
On October 14, representatives from Caritas Health Group, the Alberta Government, and Capital Health gathered to officially launch construction of the new $13.3 million Grey Nuns Day Clinic Support Building. As construction crews began to break up asphalt in a parking lot outside the hospital, hundreds of staff and guests got together to celebrate with speeches and refreshments in the lobby.

Journey’s end in the quiet of the night
In the stillness of the night, Zen Zatorski, a 54-year-old trucker fondly described by his spouse Dorothy as a “starburst, larger than life,” is slipping quietly away. Resting in the family room nearby, an exhausted Dorothy and Zen’s sister Phyllis wake to gather round Zen’s bed with his nurses to say goodbye.
Finding support for daily challenges
This afternoon, Lise Storgaard sits reasonably comfortably in a Grey Nuns examination room listening as health educator Shelly Hagen explains the effects of nutrition on bone density. It's hard to imagine that 14 months earlier Lise lay writhing in pain with non-stop spasms due to stress fractures in her spine—unable to drive or work, fearful of the future.
Wellbeing for Women
Women approaching midlife in the region and beyond need not face the physical and emotional challenges of aging alone, thanks to an innovative Caritas program based at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital. The Mature Women's Program was launched in 1998 with funding support from the Caritas Hospitals Foundation.
On 30 Years of Service
Dorothy Smolek is the Diabetes Clinical Educator at the Grey Nuns, and the Triage Nursefor the new Regional Diabetes Program. She received her 30 year pin at the Caritas Long Service Award, Banquet on Friday, June 13. The following are her remarks, made that evening on behalf of all long service award recipients.
