On 30 Years of Service

Dorothy Smolek is the Diabetes Clinical Educator at the Grey Nuns, and the Triage Nurse
for the new Regional Diabetes Program. She received her 30 year pin at the Caritas Long Service Award, Banquet on Friday, June 13. The following are her remarks, made that evening on behalf of all long service award recipients.

Thirty years ago this summer, I finished nursing school. Earning $450.00 per month, I was ready to take on the world. I had no idea about being an employee, or looking for a good, safe place to work. I hadn't heard about respect or enrichment in terms of employment, although I knew instinctively that I wanted those very things. How lucky I was to find those very qualities in the first place I worked. I think it's time I said thank you. On behalf of all long service award recipients, staff, physicians and volunteers, I say...

Thank you Caritas for helping us enrich our minds by encouraging us to keep learning. We have been able to provide better care because of it. Thank you for reminding us of the importance of the spiritual aspect of life, no matter what religion a person practices. It has made us more responsive to all peoples needs. Thank you for reminding us that it is people that are, and always have been our greatest treasure.  We make a good team!
