Being both new to Edmonton and to Caritas Health Group, my first few weeks at Caritas provided me with the unique opportunity to see health care and our Caritas facilities from the vantage point of a stranger.

In addition to the new faces and responsibilities of my position, I first had to answer more basic questions, such as just what route take to drive to each facility, where to park and how to find specific offices and units. This naturally made me very conscious of the power of first impressions.
I found myself imagining what it would be like for someone like a patient or family visitor who also stepped foot into our facilities for the first time. Even if a person has been to our Caritas sites many times, a health crisis could quickly transform a familiar setting into a whole new emotional terrain. I t reminded me of what an opportunity each of us has to communicate our Caritas values and the simple warmth of our Caritas family each time we encounter a new patient, visitor or new employee.
First impressions are a unique occasion to show a patient or visitor what Caritas is all about and often it's the only opportunity we'll ever have. For instance, a patient who stays three or four days at the Grey Nuns or Misericordia Community hospital, or a visitor who spends an afternoon at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre may literally base their entire opinion of Caritas on these first impressions alone. I've been fortunate to have had many positive experiences as a newcomer to Caritas. In making my first steps inside the Edmonton General, the Grey Nuns, and the Misericordia, I've encountered staff who greeted me, staff who redirected me when I was lost, and others who simply smiled and said hello as we passed in the hallway. On occasion, I've even met staff who spontaneously toured me around and introduced me to their colleagues. I've been treated with dignity, respect and hospitality. Each of these experiences defines the meaning behind the words of the Caritas Mission.
