"Our volunteers come from all walks of life and every age group. Some volunteer a few hours a month, others a few days a week. Their roles vary according to their skills, gifts and experience and the needs of the hospital. Volunteers cuddle babies, bring books to patients, serve on committees, greet visitors, visit with patients, knit baby layettes, work in the floral or gift shops, sew and bake with residents, play the piano, lead kindergarden tours and more.
For many volunteers, the chance to contribute brings its own rewards: "I'm a firm believer that you get back whatever you give," says Theresa Armstrong, who volunteers at a weekly tea on the Grey Nuns Palliative Care unit. "Volunteering in Palliative Care is my spiritual renewal. When my well is dry, being part of the love and caring there just fills me up."
