Senior Executive Team

Patrick Dumelie
President, Caritas Health Group

Patrick is committed to advancing the contributions of faith-based health care in Alberta and Canada, and to help Caritas play a pivotal role in meeting the growing demands for health care services in the region. With a strong background in leadership, change management and strategic planning, he is inspiring a team of 6,400 staff, 1,300 physicians and 1,400 volunteers to fulfill Caritas new Vision 2020.

Patrick joined Caritas on July 24, 2006. He comes from the Regina Qu'Appelle Health Region in Saskatchewan where he served as Senior Vice President of Health Services. Prior to that, he served as Chief Operating Officer—Integrated Health Services for the Regina Health District. His 18-year career includes leadership positions in acute and long-term care, ambulance services, community health, strategic planning and a broad range of administrative services.

Patrick holds a Masters of Business Administration from Queens University and a Bachelor of Administration degree from the University of Regina. He has also completed certificate programs in Mediation, Labour Relations, Management Accounting and Health Services Management.

Jeffery M. Robinson BSc MD CCFP Dip. Sport Med.
Chief of Staff

Dr. Robinson is a family physician who has practiced in Edmonton since 1983. Currently the majority of his professional time is spent as the Chief of Staff for the Caritas Health Group. His clinical practice, which is located at the Misericordia Community Hospital, is in Family Medicine.  He also practices primary care sport medicine at the Glen Sather University of Alberta Sports Medicine Clinic and he is a team physician for the Edmonton Cracker Cats Baseball Club, the Edmonton Eskimo Football Club and Edmonton Oilers Hockey.
 
Dr. Robinson completed his undergraduate and medical degrees at the University of Calgary and his post-graduate Family Medicine residency at the University of Alberta. Dr. Robinson is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Alberta.
 
During his career Dr. Robinson has served as the Executive Director for the Alberta Chapter of the College of Family Physicians in Canada.  He is a Past-President of the Canadian Academy of Sport Medicine and the Sport Medicine Council of Alberta. He has worked internationally with Canada's national field hockey, volleyball and figure skating teams. He was a member of the medical team for Canada at international games including the Olympic Summer Games in Barcelona and World University Games in Zagreb and Palma and was the Chief Medical Officer for Canada at the Pan American Games in Argentina in 1995.
 
Greg Hadubiak, FACHE
Vice President, Operations—Grey Nuns Community Hospital
 
Greg was appointed to the role of Vice-President on April 1, 2002, but is no stranger to Caritas having worked for the organization between 1992 and 1995—during the formation of both Caritas and the Capital Health Authority.
 
Greg received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Saskatchewan with a major in Health Care Administration in 1986, and his Master's Degree in Health Services Administration from the University of Alberta in 1993. Greg is also a member of the Canadian College of Health Services Executives and a Certified Healthcare Executive (CHE) in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
 
Greg's career has spanned the three prairie provinces and a range of health care environments, from small rural to large urban, from not-for-profit to provincial department's of health, and from health promotion/public health to acute care.  In that time, Greg also enjoyed a 4-year stint as an emergency medical technician in a small volunteer ambulance service in Manitoba.

Sheli Murphy
Vice President, Operations—Misericordia Community Hospital


Sheli has been Vice President, Operations at the Misericordia since December 1, 1998. In her current role, Sheli has responsibility for Misericordia's 251 inpatient beds in support of a variety of programs including: ICU, CCU, Medical, Therapeutic (Rehab Medicine and Respiratory), Surgical and Pediatrics. Her responsibility also includes on-site support services: Ambulatory Care, Emergency and Labor and Delivery. Corporate programs under her direction include Diagnostic Imaging, Lab services and Pharmacy. COMPRU and HBO are signature programs at Misericordia. She also has lead role for Academics and Research for Caritas Health group and is the organizations Chief Nursing Officer.
 
She has extensive clinical experience as a nurse in Emergency, Pediatric ICU, and Pediatric Medical/ Surgical. She was responsible for educating physicians, nurses, paramedics and respiratory technologist in Advanced Life Support through Grant MacEwan Community College, and has held clinical research positions in active treatment settings, investigating a wide variety of conditions and potential therapies. She has MBA/HCM/MSN and is currently a PhD candidate for Leadership and Administrative Management at Greenleaf University in St. Louis. 

Al Pierog
Vice President, Continuing Care

Al Pierog provides leadership to the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre—supporting the efforts of 900 staff and 350 volunteers who care for 430 residents and 20 sub acute and 22 palliative care patients. Al joined the Caritas leadership team in November 2004—after 25 years with Catholic Social Services where he'd served in various leadership roles, including the previous nine as Chief Operating Officer. Al is an active member of the local community, including the Knights of Columbus and Rotary.
 
A registered Social Worker who holds a Master's in Science Administration, Al takes pride in a solutions-focused style of leadership. The emphasis on best practice; responsive, resident centered services; and compassionate, professional care is intended to position Caritas as a preferred provider of complex care, respected for quality, stewardship and excellence.  'Together with staff and volunteers, we work to engage families to maintain their rightful role with their loved one,  and offer care that residents experience as respectful, thoughtful, dignified, kind and generous.  It is the resident experience that measures our success in achieving our mission."
 
Fran Ross
Vice President, Caritas Communications and Community Relations
 
Fran Ross leads Caritas Health Group's efforts to foster open, effective and meaningful communications both in its internal operations and its external relations.  Her role encompasses corporate communications, marketing and advocacy efforts.  This work supports the organization's efforts to build relationships and alliances, provide leadership in faith-based health care, and live the mission and values of the organization in day to day actions and interactions.
 
Fran came to Caritas in April 2000 with 13 years of experience in organizational communications and marketing at the University of Alberta's Faculty of Extension.  She has worked as a journalist and has served as a communications and marketing consultant in both the public and private sector.  She has an Honors BA in English from Calvin College in Michigan and a Master's degree in Journalism from the University of Western Ontario.
 
Gordon Self
Vice President, Mission, Ethics and Spirituality
 
Gordon is executive lead for clinical and organizational ethics, mission integration, diversity and spiritual care at Caritas.  He is the co-facilitator of the Caritas Leadership Program, helping develop leaders in values-based decision-making and moral reflection, making extensive use of the Health Ethics Guide in his teaching, clinical and administrative roles.
 
A former chaplain at St. Boniface General Hospital in Winnipeg, Gordon pursued a fellowship in mission and ethics with Trinity Health of Novi, Michigan and is currently working part-time on his Doctor of Ministry degree with a focus on organizational decision-making and discernment.

Rosa Rudelich, C.A.
Vice President, Finance

Rosa was appointed to her current position in July, 1997 and is responsible for Finance, Legal, Risk Management, Health Records, Telecommunications, Material Management, Purchasing, and Biomedical Engineering. She joined the Caritas Health Group in July, 1995 as the Controller, Financial Operations.
Rosa is a Chartered Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta.  She was admitted to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Alberta and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants in 1990. Financial background prior to joining Caritas includes five years with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in Edmonton and three years with Children's Health Centre of Northern Alberta (now Stollery Children's Hospital) as Manager, Financial Services.  She also completed the Catholic Leadership program at the University of St. Michael's College in May 2003. Rosa is active in the community having served as Treasurer for the Crestwood Community League and the Dante Alighieri Society of Edmonton. She served two terms on the board of the Sexual Assault Centre of Edmonton and is a current member of the Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns) of Alberta Investment Committee.

Karen Galenzoski
Vice President, Human Resource Services
 
Karen was appointed Vice President, Human Resources in July 2005 and is accountable for the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of a comprehensive range of Human Resource programs and services, including: HR planning, wage and salary administration, employee benefits, job evaluation/design, labour/employee relations, recruitment, retention and recognition. Also included within the HR portfolio is responsibility for Staff Education and Development, Library, Audio Visual Services, and Occupational Health and Safety.
 
Karen has over 20 years experience in various roles within Human Resources, including five years with a Vancouver faith based hospital and 17 with the three Caritas Health Group facilities.
 
Jon Popowich
Vice President, Strategic Planning and Quality
 
Jon currently provides overall accountability for the current strategic planning process, providing the processes and infrastructure needed to assist executive, managers, physicians and staff as they plan for and implement Caritas' vision of the future. He is also responsible for setting and supporting the agenda for quality, patient safety, patient relations and policies and procedures.
 
Jon joined Caritas in 1989 as an Executive Associate in Administration at the Misericordia Community Hospital. He then spent several years working in Quality Development, where he was actively involved in the development and delivery of quality improvement training, and the daily management of Caritas' overall quality improvement initiative. He then moved to corporate administration for Caritas, with responsibility for supporting the interface between the Board of Directors and executive, and providing performance support to the strategic planning underway at that time.
